Blackmagic PYXIS 12K Launches as a Full-Frame Cinematic Powerhouse

The new Blackmagic PYXIS 12K camera debuts with a full-frame RGBW sensor and 12K RAW recording at $4,995, redefining high-end production.

During NAB 2025 Blackmagic Design presented its recently unveiled cinema camera called PYXIS 12K to the public. The new professional PYXIS 12K model features a full-frame RGBW sensor and permits internal BRAW RAW recording for Blackmagic Data Recording in its format. The camera system provides interchangeable EF L and PL lens adapters so filmmakers can easily work with their preferred lenses regardless of their diverse catalog.

The PYXIS 12K offers high-end visuals at $4,995 while being significantly smaller than previous URSA versions to serve users who need professional-grade imaging without excessive bulk. Aluminum construction of this camera includes four-inch tilt-able HDR LCD display alongside customizable buttons and SDI and HDMI ports and built-in ND filters that fit perfectly in square form factors to support complex camera rig setups.

What Makes the Blackmagic PYXIS 12K Stand Out

At the heart of the Blackmagic PYXIS 12K is its newly developed full-frame 36x24mm sensor with native 12K resolution (12,288 x 6480). The RGBW sensor architecture throughout this device leads to increased color precision alongside expanded dynamic range which results in authentic filmic pictures suitable for production environments. The camera enables users to record footage at 12K resolution together with 8K and 4K resolutions through the efficient BRAW codec system which ensures top quality and optimal storage efficiency.

In terms of connectivity and usability, the Blackmagic PYXIS 12K offers advanced monitoring tools such as false color, waveform, and focus assist directly on its articulating screen. The device contains two CFexpress Type B card slots and enables USB-C SSD recording from its body. The camera delivers dual native ISO technology together with 16 stops of dynamic range specification which promotes superior performance in unpredictable lighting conditions.

Designed for Versatility on Set

The designers placed emphasis on making this system flexible to use. The Blackmagic PYXIS 12K includes three lens mount options—EF, L, and PL—each swappable to match various production needs. This camera fulfills different production requirements by switching between commercial and documentary and cinematic work without needing extra cages or modifications.

The camera processes audio signals through its two balanced mini-XLR inputs and users can monitor videos through either the full-size 12G-SDI or HDMI ports. The professional capabilities include Timecode and genlock alongside reference connections so the camera becomes ready for broadcast and multi-camera operations. Blackmagic enables users to apply 3D LUTs, perform anamorphic de-squeeze adjustments and perform direct-to-edit recording through DaVinci Resolve.
